Spec-driven development, explained plainly
The spec comes first. The software follows it.
In a chat-driven workflow, an agent receives a prompt, improvises an approach, and declares the work done; nobody can say afterwards what the agent was asked to do, so nobody can check whether it did it.
Spec-driven development reverses that. Shaping decides what gets built. The specification is written before agents touch code. Acceptance criteria define done, and each one is validated with evidence instead of a reviewer’s optimism.
Improvised work ships twice.
Without a spec and acceptance criteria, the demo that impressed the team fails the second build, because nothing recorded what the agent was asked to deliver in the first place.
